Leon’s Story

Over the three years we have known Leon, he has gone from sleeping on the streets and dealing with drug dependency, to a hostel and now into his own flat.

Troubled teenage years

Our Outreach worker, Carla, met Leon for his initial assessment over a hot drink in the warmth of a café. It was winter, and Leon was sleeping on the streets.

Leon experienced a turbulent adolescence. He fought often with his stepdad and his relationship with his mum had broken down. Leon had felt it was impossible to keep living at home. He had been staying in a hostel, but he had recently been evicted after struggling to keep up with his rent.

Multiple challenges

Carla made an immediate homeless application through the council and Leon moved into temporary accommodation.

However, it became apparent that alongside needing help to find somewhere to stay, Leon needed extra support to learn how to maintain a tenancy.
Leon needed support for cannabis dependency, his mental health and learning difficulties. At this time, Leon was unable to maintain his tenancy. It wasn’t long before he was evicted for bringing in guests and partying.

We didn’t give up on Leon. We understand that it can take time for a young person to overcome a lifetime of adversities and reach a place where they can successfully live independently.

Carla reached out to the hostel Leon had previously stayed at and negotiated for him to return, with a payment plan in place to manage his rent arrears.

We also referred Leon to the charity Change, Grow, Live for support with his cannabis use. And Leon was able to work through his anger issues with the hostel’s in house counsellor.

Next steps

With this network of support in place, Leon has made steady progress. After 18 months at the hostel,  the team could see how much he had grown.
Leon was ready for the next steps. He was awarded a flat by the council. And we were there to help him get settled into his new home.

It has been a privilege to work with Leon over these three years and to see the fantastic progress he has made.
