About Youth Homelessness

Young people have distinct drivers into homelessness and experiences of the system. Many are experiencing hidden homelessness, which is less visible than street homelessness. This can involve long periods of movement between a range of precarious accommodation options such as on friends’ sofas or in inadequate or overcrowded conditions. This is happening right now in our local community.

Just because hidden homelessness is not visible, does not mean it doesn't exist. Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and to have access to decent housing. hyh is committed to protecting this essential human need.

Often, people are pushed into these situations when constant external pressures and strains build up over time. Many young people have been left carrying a very heavy load on their shoulders. The cost of living crisis, low wages and inadequate government support are all examples of pressures that can wear away and eventually, lead to a breaking point. These problems could be lessened with the right support, and this is where we step in.

In our experience, it’s crucial to respond to the needs of young people at this bridge between childhood and adulthood. At hyh, we support the unique needs of young people within the wider homelessness system, with tailored, solution-focused support. They should not be forced through inappropriate adult pathways.

Nearly half of adults experiencing homelessness first became homeless under the age of 20, and this trauma can lead to longterm support needs. Addressing the root causes can avoid a huge amount of future homelessness. hyh’s strategy therefore takes into account the distinct needs of young people. Homelessness is a matter of public concern. Youth homelessness costs £8.5 billion a year according to Centrepoint. By preventing youth homelessness at its root causes, we will significantly save further down the line.

Helping young people facing homelessness will lead to happier and healthier lives for EVERYONE and strengthen society as a whole. We are interdependent as humans, and when some people are struggling, it hurts everyone. We are all pieces of the same puzzle.
