What is the service?

The Mediation service works with people who are having arguments. Mediators offer fair and unbiased support to help people understand what issues need to be resolved. They work with young people and their families to help them resolve their arguments and move forward in a way that feels fair to everyone involved. Mediation helps them understand what may have led to arguments in the first place and lets them be in control of how the situation is resolved. Mediation is very practical and focuses on what needs to happen to help differences get resolved.

Mediation is confidential and offers all parties the chance to look at how they can sort out their differences of opinion. It also offers chance to work towards possible ways of overcoming problems in the future.

How does Mediation work?

Each individual will meet with a mediator on their own to talk about what has been happening. The mediators will then explain how mediation meetings work and, if everyone involved thinks that mediation will help, the mediators will arrange one or more meetings.

Depending on the requirements one or two mediators might be involved who will provide a comfortable and neutral environment in which to talk. They are trained to help families talk about the issues that are important and to deal with difficult discussions. They will help to find a way forward that seems fair and practical to everyone involved.
